Nation Media Group, Kenya’s leading newspaper company, has closed its Mombasa regional newsroom, the first major office to be shut down as part of a restructuring plan to cut costs. The closure, starting in March 2026, will affect journalists, marketing staff, and other employees who work at the coastal office. The company has been facing financial challenges, including falling revenues and reduced advertising income due to competition from digital media platforms. Mombasa is NMG’s largest regional bureau, and more regional newsrooms, including Kisumu, Nakuru, Nyeri, and Eldoret, are set to be closed.
