A routine journey along the busy Mombasa–Nairobi Highway came to an abrupt end after security officers intercepted a trailer allegedly transporting bhang worth an estimated KSh24 million, leading to the arrest of two suspects in one of the latest anti-narcotics operations in Taita Taveta County.
According to authorities, the trailer was transporting the consignment from Western Kenya and was headed to Mombasa when officers intercepted it near Voi. Upon inspection, the officers recovered numerous bales of suspected bhang concealed inside the vehicle.
The operation resulted in the arrest of two male suspects, who remain in police custody as investigations continue.
Speaking to the media after the seizure, Voi Sub-County Police Commander Fredrick Kinaibei confirmed that the suspects are expected to be arraigned in court on Monday to face charges related to trafficking narcotic drugs.
He noted that investigators are working to establish whether the suspects were acting independently or as part of a larger drug trafficking network operating across different regions of the country.
Commander Kinaobei praised the cooperation between the various security agencies involved in the operation, saying intelligence sharing continues to play a critical role in intercepting illegal consignments before they reach their intended destinations.
He also issued a strong warning to individuals involved in the narcotics trade, emphasizing that security agencies will continue to intensify surveillance and enforcement operations along major highways and within the region.
The police commander further appealed to members of the public to refrain from engaging in the cultivation, transportation, sale, or consumption of narcotic drugs, urging communities to work closely with law enforcement by reporting suspicious activities.
Drug trafficking remains a major security and public health concern in Kenya, with authorities frequently identifying the Mombasa–Nairobi Highway as one of the key routes used to transport illegal substances across the country. Multi-agency operations such as the one conducted near Voi are part of ongoing efforts to disrupt these criminal networks and safeguard communities from the harmful effects of drug abuse.
The seized consignment will be held as an exhibit as the case proceeds through the courts, while investigations continue to identify any additional suspects who may have been involved in the attempted transportation of the drugs.
